non-toxic fragrance
In an age where we are increasingly vigilant about the ingredients in our beauty and personal care products, non-toxic perfumes are gaining significant attention. These fragrances are formulated without harmful chemicals, ensuring a safer experience for all.
Non-toxic perfumes are crafted without the use of harmful chemicals such as phthalates, parabens, sulphates, and synthetic dyes. These perfumes prioritise natural and safe ingredients, resulting in fragrances that are safe for both the wearer and the environment.
what is non-toxic perfume?
You will find ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’ on the ingredients list of many beauty and personal care products, but in an industry lacking regulation, brands are not required to disclose the list of chemicals and ingredients within their fragrance formulations. This means that safety cannot be assured. Our fragrances are non-toxic and we set the standard by publishing the full list of ingredients for every one of our fragrances. Our Eau de Parfums, Nurture and Pause, are designed to be safe for pregnancy and perimenopause.

Frequently asked
“I have had a scent sensitivity for as long as I can remember and have always wanted to wear perfume but couldn't. I found your perfume, particularly Black Anise, while browsing at my local natural beauty store and from then I have been hooked.
It may sound silly but it made such a difference to me to be able to actually enjoy and participate in wearing perfume.
I never get a headache from the scent which means I can wear it risk free everyday - something that is not possible for any other perfume I have encountered. I LOVE the scent but I also love how it makes me feel: beautiful, confident and dare I say even a little sultry!”
- Haley M, Abel Customer
The INCI list is not the same as a fragrance's full ingredients list. The INCI list only includes molecules in the scent that are potential allergens, as required by law. Most fragrance houses do not share their full ingredients list, providing only the INCI list. At Abel, we believe in full transparency. That’s why we also provide our full ingredients list for each fragrance, which you can explore in our perfume guide.
An INCI list isn’t a representation of the actual ingredients added to a fragrance. Instead, it’s a regulatory requirement to declare any compounds in the overall fragrance formula (even naturally occurring ones) that are potentially allergenic. Unless you have specific sensitivities, there’s no need to worry about the INCI list. The INCI list is also displayed on the bottom of all our perfume boxes and product ingredient pages.
You can find the full list of ingredients for each fragrance on our website.
Our fragrance Nurture, specifically designed to be low-allergen and pregnancy-safe, is a great example of this. A key ingredient is Bergamot Essential Oil. Because we know that Bergaptene, a molecule that naturally occurs in Bergamot Essential Oil can be associated with pigmentation, something that can be problematic to expecting mothers, we use a special Bergamot Oil that has had the Bergaptene molecule isolated and removed to make the fragrance maternity safe.
Limonene —
According to the EWG, limonene is "a scent ingredient and solvent naturally occurring in the rind of citrus fruit." For example, our Golden Neroli fragrance features substantial citrus ingredients, which have a relatively high allergen content. This is because many people have sensitivities to citrus, similar to those experienced with consuming citrus fruits. We do not add Limonene to the fragrance itself.
Benzyl Salicylate —
According to pubchem, Benzyl Salicylate is a molecule that is naturally occurring “in the flower oils of hyacinths and ylang-ylang oil”. For example, a key ingredient in our Golden Neroli fragrance is ylang-ylang. We do not add Benzyl Salicylate to the fragrance itself.
Why does the INCI list make natural fragrances have higher allergen content than their synthetic counterparts?
Our fragrances can have a higher allergen content than their synthetic counterparts due to plant-derived ingredients tending to have more allergens than synthetic ingredients - we all know friends and family who suffer hayfever and you're more likely to be allergic to plants than to plastic! All the ingredients in our fragrances are naturally occurring allergens derived from plants, not synthetic chemicals. People can have sensitivities to these molecules just as they do to certain foods.
All our 100% natural non-toxic perfumes are safe to wear during pregnancy and postpartum (including breastfeeding). Our non-toxic perfume, Nurture, is specifically designed with ingredients that are naturally low in allergens to ensure safety during pregnancy and around little ones.
The term "Parfum" refers to a complex blend of ingredients in a fragrance and is a legally required packaging term on fragrances ingredients lists. Since there are no industry regulations mandating full ingredient disclosure for fragrances, many brands simply list "Parfum" without revealing the actual ingredients, which is often made up of as much as 90% synthetic ingredients. This lack of transparency leaves consumers unaware of what’s inside the fragrance.
At Abel, we want to make transparent fragrance the norm in an industry shrouded in secrecy.
We provide our full ingredients list for all our fragrances, which are 100% plant-derived and free from synthetics. Every ingredient in our fragrances started its life as a plant, and we want our customers to feel confident in this. Full ingredient transparency means every ingredient in our fragrances is listed clearly on our website, so you can be fully informed on what is in your Abel fragrance.
