What are natural ingredients in fragrance?
Natural ingredients started life as a plant, yeast or fungi. These ingredients are extracted from their natural source through various methods to be used in our natural perfume.
What are artificial ingredients in fragrance?
Artificial ingredients are manufactured in a lab setting from a synthetic source such as crude oil and natural gas.
These petrochemical-derived fragrance ingredients are designed to mimic scents found in nature, though they are not natural.
The fossil fuels from which they are derived are associated with adverse environmental and health concerns.
Why does Abel believe in natural ingredients?
We value natural ingredients for their beauty and uniqueness, but the bottom line for us is removing from our formulas the environmental cost associated with artificial, petrochemical-derived ingredients.
Our natural perfume is made only from natural ingredients.
Is biotechnology natural?
Biotechnology in fragrance creation uses natural processes—like fermentation, enzymes, and microorganisms—to make scent ingredients instead of extracting them from plants or synthesising them from petroleum.
Biotech can scale rare or endangered scents (like real sandalwood or musk) in a sustainable way. It's a mix of nature and science for a more sustainable, precise way to create natural perfume that isn’t harmful to people or planet.
What about clean, or 98% natural ingredients?
Fragrance formulations are considered trade secrets so disclosure of specific scent ingredients is not required. Instead, the terms ‘parfum’ or ‘fragrance’ can obscure up to 3,000 scent molecules.
This means no formula is guaranteed to be safe from harmful artificial ingredients and the reason we set the benchmark at 100% natural.
Similarly, there is no regulation to define ‘clean’ within the fragrance industry. Some brands have their own definition or choose to use what they deem ‘safe synthetics’.
We feel strongly about ingredient transparency, which is why Abel’s standard is 100% natural.
